How to Vet Upwork Clients: A 6-Step Checklist to Avoid Scams

Vetting clients is key to protecting your time and Connects. Learn the 6 crucial metrics to analyze on every Upwork job post before applying.

How to Vet Upwork Clients: A 6-Step Checklist to Avoid Scams

The Hidden Cost of Blind Applying

The biggest mistake made by beginner and intermediate freelancers on Upwork is treating the platform like a numbers game. They believe that applying to 20 jobs a day will eventually yield clients.

However, on Upwork, every application costs Connects, which translates to cold hard cash. More importantly, applying to bad clients leads to bad contracts: micro-management, low hourly rates, bad feedback scores, or even outright financial scams.

To build a sustainable freelance career, you must learn to act like a gatekeeper. You must vet the clients before they have a chance to vet you.

Here is the 6-Step Client Vetting Checklist used by Top Rated Plus freelancers to filter out bad clients.

The 6-Step Upwork Client Vetting Checklist

1. Payment Method: Verified vs. Unverified

An unverified payment method is the number one flag for a scam. While some genuine clients join the platform and write posts before connecting their credit card, scammers do this to bypass filters.

  • Rule: Avoid unverified clients unless the job post is highly detailed and specific. Never start work without payment verification.

2. The Client's "Hire Rate"

The Hire Rate is located on the right side of the job post under "Client Activity." It represents the percentage of posted jobs that resulted in a contract.

  • Under 40%: Avoid. They post jobs but rarely hire. They are farming free ideas or price checking.
  • 60% or higher: This is a serious buyer who knows what they want and moves quickly.

3. Average Hourly Rate Paid

If you are a senior developer charging $70/hour, check what the client has paid historically. If their average paid rate is $15/hour, they are looking for budget freelancers. Even if they advertise "Expert level," they are unlikely to agree to your rate.

4. Client Reviews & Feedback History

Scroll down to the bottom of the job posting to see reviews left by other freelancers.

  • Look for retaliatory ratings: If you see a client giving 1 or 2 stars to multiple freelancers, they are likely difficult to work with.
  • Look at the text: Do freelancers complain about scope creep, poor communication, or delayed payments?

5. Number of Open Jobs and Hires

A client who has 20 active jobs but only 2 hires might be farming work or running an agency arbitrage operation (hiring you cheap and selling your work to someone else). Make sure their active contracts look balanced.

6. Job Posting Location

The client’s geographic location can tell you a lot about their budget and time zone compatibility. Vetting the location helps ensure you don't end up having project calls at 3 AM your time.

Red Flags You Can't Ignore

If a client ticks any of these boxes, close the page immediately:

  • "We will communicate on Telegram/WhatsApp." (This is a violation of Upwork's Terms of Service and is the setup for almost all payment scams).
  • "Must complete a unpaid test project." (Unpaid work is forbidden on Upwork. If they want a test, they must pay for it).
  • "We want a long-term relationship but have no budget right now." (They will make promises they cannot keep).
